Embrace the Mud

Cross Country is the ultimate test of endurance. At Burnley AC, our program builds the stamina and mental toughness required to conquer the winter trails of Lancashire.

Sessions focus on hill intervals, pacing over variable terrain, pack running, and building the aerobic engine necessary for the mud and wet conditions of winter league fixtures.

Spikes & Footwear Specs

For cross country, standard road shoes won’t cut it. We recommend dedicated cross country spikes with adaptable elements—using 9mm spike studs for firm ground, or shifting up to 12mm to 15mm studs when racing through deep mid-winter mud channels.

Mandatory Club Kit Rules

To score team points across the Mid Lancs or Red Rose leagues, all athletes must compete wearing the official Burnley AC maroon club vest. Spikes, long socks, and thermal layers beneath the vest are highly encouraged.

Post-Race Survival Rules

The golden rule of cross country is preparation. Always pack a full “dry bag” for race days including towels, a windproof change of underwear, warm base-layers, and a flask. Getting warm immediately after crossing the finish line is vital.
